The Pink and Black Album visual spread redesign

This project is a redesign of the visual media surrounding the queer punk album by Dog Park Dissidents, The Pink and Black Album. It includes a full album cover spread, as well as a dynamic visualiser optimised for streaming.

Concept and visual themes

The redesign of The Pink and Black Album is intended to capture the prominent emotional peaks of the tracks while referencing the historical foundation of design in the punk movement.

Kembra Earle, 2023

Unknown designer, 2024

Anger and aggression - bold text, all-caps stylisation, evocative and animal imagery.

Steady Co., 2022

Danny Scott Lane, 2019

Eroticism and intimacy - tightly framed photography, physical contact, high contrast, flesh.

Unknown designer, 1977

Jon Savage, 1979

DIY and punk authenticity - compositions with lofi photography and analogue techniques, like collage.

Composition

Photography - shot, colour adjusted, and printed - forms the basis of the album spread design's analogue layout.

Application

The exterior album spread features the printed photographs arranged into a collage-like scene which suggests the subject is looking in the mirror where they've written the band name in lipstick.

The interior spread extends the established visual language, drawing in further historical punk and animalistic imagery through photographs.

An animated form of the album cover is applied in the context of music streaming.
